Elvis Birthday Bash (Troy, N.Y.) - The Hangar on the Hudson will celebrate what would have been Elvis Presley’s 89th Birthday with the Elvis’ 89th Birthday Bash Celebration! Sunday, January 21, 2024. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7:00 p.m. Music will be provided by Johnny Rabb and The Tichy Boys. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $20 via Eventbrite or at the Ale House, located at 680 River St, Troy, or $25 on the day of the show. The show, previously held on Saturday, January 6, was postponed due to the snowstorm. More info can be found on The Hangar on The Hudson’s Facebook page.
Call For Entries for the Arkell Museum (Canajoharie, N.Y.) - The Arkell Museum at the Canajoharie Library is seeking artists who live in New York State to submit an art piece for the upcoming exhibition, “The Art of New York: Annual Juried Art Show”. This year’s juror is Doretta Miller, Professor Emerita of the Art Department at Skidmore College. The artworks considered for the exhibition need to be at its maximum height or width of 50” for 2-D work and 24” for 3-D work. The selected pieces will be on view from May 10-July 21,2024 at the regional art galleries. Artists whose work has been accepted can tour the Arkell Museum with a one-day-free admission pass with a guest and the accepted artists are also eligible for consideration for solo Regional Art Gallery exhibitions. Winter Festival at Grafton Lakes State Park (Grafton, N.Y - Grafton Lakes State Park and Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park are once again putting together the 2024 Annual Winter Festival to be held Saturday, January 20,2024 at Grafton Lakes State Park, located at 254 Grafton Lakes State Park Way, Grafton, 11:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. This family-friendly event will feature snowshoeing, live music, live animals, food trucks, and the polar plunge. Registration for the event is limited to the first 150 participants with the donation fee of $25 (includes event t-shirt) or $15 entry (without t-shirt). Proceeds benefit the Our Lady of Victory and Our Lady of the Snow Food Pantry. Check in for the plunge begins at 11:00 a.m. and the plunge takes place at 11:30 a.m. Registration for the polar plunge can be found online at https://zippy-reg.com/register/graftonpolarplunge . With the exception of the polar plunge, the festival is free.
Strand Theatre Hosts Weekend Concerts for Jan.20-Jan. 21 (Hudson Falls, N.Y.) - Come to The Strand Theatre in Hudson Falls this weekend for some live music. Starting Saturday, January 20, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. will be a matinee concert by Albert Lee, a renowned guitarist who has worked with The Everly Brothers, Eric Capton, and The Crickets. The opening act will be The Strand House Band. Tickets are $30 general admission. Saturday evening’s event will feature Strange Magic NY-ELO Tribute, a tribute band to commemorate the music of 70s rock band, Electric Light Orchestra. The show will start at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $30 general admission.

Showing up at the Strand on Sunday, Jan. 21 is Saratoga Springs resident, Matthew Boyce, who has starred in numerous touring productions as Elvis Presley across the United States and Canada. Come see Boyce pay tribute to the King of Rock and Roll at 1:00 p.m., $20 general admission. Performing in the evening at 7:30 p.m. will be TR3 featuring Tim Reynolds, the guitarist of the Dave Matthews Band. Joining Reynolds in the band will be Dan Martier and Mick Vaughn and this year, will be releasing their album, “Watch It”. Tickets are $30 general admission. University Art Museum to Open Two Exhibits (Albany, N.Y.) - The University Art Museum at SUNY Albany will open the spring semester with two new exhibition shows. Opening on January 22 is Body Maps: Works from the University at Albany Fine Art Collections in Conversation With Past Exhibiting Artists. The exhibit, to be on view through April 3, 2024, on the second Floor Main Gallery and Nancy Hyatt Liddle Gallery, will explore the relationship between the body and oneself through video, photography, painting, printmaking and sculpture. The second exhibit, Introphantasm, curated by M.F.A. student and curator at The Arts Center of the Capital Region Bella Burnett, gives the viewer of the exhibit an introspective look into the relationships between personal and cultural memory and history as seen in the exhibited work. Spring Awakening Heading to SLOC (Schenectady, N.Y.) - Schenectady Light Opera Company (SLOC) will present “Spring Awakening”, based on the book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik, with a series of performances to be held on January 19-20,25-27 at 8:00 p.m. as well as both January 21 and 28 at 3:00 p.m. at the venue, located at 427 Franklin Street, Schenectady. Ticket prices range from $25-$32. The local production of “Spring Awakening” is based on the self-discovery of oneself and the journey that the individual takes from adolescence to adulthood. The production will feature Ben Hitrick (Melchior), Hannah DeStefano (Wendla), Josh DeMarco (Moritz), Ellya Winchester (Ilse), Steve Kay (Hanschen), and Michaela Torres (Martha). This play is rated R for explicit language, sexual situations, and triggering scenes of violence and is suitable for adults or teens with parental supervision. Thomas Cole’s The Clove, Catskills: A “Native” Past for A Sustainable Future (Catskill, N.Y.) - The 21st Annual Speaker Series will be held at the Thomas Cole National Historical Site once a month beginning Sunday, January 21,2024 and running through April. The talks are based on ideas revolving around American art at the 1846 studio building on the Thomas Cole site campus. The Sunday, January 21 presentation will be given by Michael Quituisaca, a Cole Fellow Alumni who is a PhD Candidate at Princeton University. Quituisaca will be discussing his graduate school research and how the Cole Fellowship helped prepare his academic career at Princeton University where he is studying 19th and 20th century American art. In 2020, Quituisaca received his master’s degree in art history from American University where he specialized in studying Thomas Cole. The Sunday Salons cost $10 for members and $15 for general admission. Children ages 15 and under and all food stamp recipients receive free admission.
