Jason Moran and The Bandwagon Coming to MASS MoCA
NORTH ADAMS, MA - Pianist and composer Jason Moran will be performing at MASS MoCA (located at 1040 MASS MoCA Way, North Adams, MA) as part of his current exhibition, Black Stars: Writing In The Dark with his trio, The Bandwagon. The Bandwagon featuring Moran, bassist Tarus Mateen, and drummer Nasheet Waits, will perform a series of jazz tunes inside the Hunter Center on Friday, Nov. 17, 8 p.m. Tickets are $39 in advance, $49 day of show, and $79 which includes the concert and post-show reception. Can A Song Change the World? Songs of Struggle, Protest, and Affirmation
COLONIE - Lecturer Robert Cohen will present, “Can A Song Change the World? Songs of Struggle, Protest, & Affirmation” on Sunday, Nov. 12 at the William K. Sanford Public Library from 2-3 p.m. Cohen will present songs from the times of Colonial America, Abolition movement, Civil Rights struggle, anti and pro war songs, and songs from the labor and environmental movements. Listen to the songs and reflect how they were written within times of struggle and protest in various moments in time at the library. “People and Places” at Arlene’s
COLONIE - Arlene’s Artist Materials artist-in-residence and illustrator Ottavia Huang opened her current solo exhibition, “People and Places”, Friday, Nov. 3. The exhibition, to feature over 40 plus works of art, will be on view until Dec. 1. Huang has been an artist-in-residence at Arlene’s for one year. Arlene’s is located at 57 Fuller Road in Albany. Registration Open for 76th Annual Troy Turkey Trot
TROY - The Troy Turkey Trot officials have announced that registration is open to take part in the 76th Annual Troy Turkey Trot and so far, more than 2,750 participants have signed up for the run. The Thanksgiving running race, held on Thursday, Nov. 23, will start at 4th and Fulton Streets and finish at River Street’s Monument Square. Prize money will be offered in the 10K race and age group awards will be offered in both the 10K and 5K. All participants will receive a commemorative athletic blend shirt and a finisher medal. The Trot will begin at 8 a.m. with the 10K, following that the Grade School Mile and Turkey Walk at 9:30 a.m. and 9:35 a.m., respectively, and closing out with the 5K at 10 a.m. A virtual race option is also available for participants to take part in a virtual 5K, 10K, Grade School Mile or Turkey Walk. Susanna Hoffs to speak at UAlbany’s Downtown Campus - Page Hall
ALBANY - Susanna Hoffs, lead singer, guitarist, and founder of The Bangles, who’s known for her hit songs, “Manic Monday”, “Walk Like An Egyptian”, “In Your Room”, and “Eternal Flame”, will be speaking at SUNY Albany’s Page Hall, located at 135 Western Avenue at the UAlbany Downtown Campus, Thursday, Nov. 9, 7 p.m. Hoffs, also an author, will hold a discussion about her best-selling debut novel, This Bird Has Flown (2023) about a sad, joyful, sexy, and funny tale of Jane Start, a broke thirty-something singer who once had a hit song. Universal Pictures obtained the movie rights to produce This Bird Has Flown into a movie, with Liza Chasin and Bruna Papandrea on board to produce the film. The presentation is free admission, no tickets required.
Visual Poetry: New Vistas to open at Arts Center of the Capital Region
TROY - The Arts Center of the Capital Region will open its new exhibition show, Visual Poetry: New Vistas on Monday, Nov. 13. The exhibition, on view through Dec. 20, will feature works of art from local artists Marissa Cavanaugh, Laura Frare, Mary Kathryn Jablonski, Drea LaRose, Willie Marlowe, Kelsey Renko, Kim Tateo, and Yeachin Tsai, as well as other international artists. This exhibition explores how “visual poetry” is expressed through the written and spoken word to visual artworks that communicate through its imagery and color without uttering a single word. Opening reception for the exhibit is Nov. 17, 6-8 p.m. and Visual Poetry: Poetry in Performance will be held Nov. 28, 6-9 p.m. Exhibition is free to the public.
Electric City Barn to Present 50 Years of Hip-Hop: 5 Pillars of Hip-Hop
SCHENECTADY- Electric City Barn will present 50 Years of Hip-Hop: 5 Pillars of Hip-Hop Friday, Nov. 10, 5-9 p.m. This free event will feature music from DJ Ketchup, guest speakers, vendors, food, and educational stations about the five pillars of hip-hop. The event will be hosted by Adonis Richards. This event is an exclusive event: Members of the Electric City Barn cannot work in any portion of Electric City Barn for the entirety of the event. Electric City Barn is located at 400 Craig Street, Schenectady.
12th Annual Pride of Our Nation…Pride of Our College to Open at H.V.C.C.
TROY - The 12th Annual Pride of Our Nation…Pride of Our College exhibition, featuring photographs and memorabilia from veterans and active military service members that have a connection to Hudson Valley Community College (H.V.C.C.) will open on Veterans Day, Saturday, Nov. 11, 1-4 p.m. for the opening reception at the Marvin Library Learning Commons on the first floor. The exhibit, on view until Dec. 15, will include a wide variety of military souvenirs on display ranging from photographs, dog tags, medals, to items as far back as the Civil War and World War II.
